Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins at the lower part of the anus or rectum. They give immense pain and obstruct normal day-to-day activities. Less severe piles can put you in embarrassing situations, as they can cause bleeding without giving you any pain.
Other symptoms of piles include:
- Itching and irritation in the anal area
- Swelling and lumps in the anal area
- Leaking feces
- As these symptoms coincide with that of colorectal and anal cancers, you must visit your doctor immediately when you observe any of the above symptoms. The doctor will examine you physically and suggest few diagnostic tests such as digital rectal examination, anoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy.
Diagnosis and treatment
Doctors may suggest non-surgical treatments such as medication, elastic bands, sclerotherapy, infrared photocoagulation, and electrocoagulation for internal hemorrhoids. However, it is always preferred to remove the swollen glands permanently using surgical methods.
Traditional open surgery can be adopted for removing the hemorrhoids permanently. Still, laser surgery can be your choice of treatment as it gives significantly less pain and helps in quick healing.
